"I will make you Fishers of Men..."

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

Luke 5:1-11

Once while Jesus[a] was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Jesus was in search of more souls to bring to His Kingdom. He challenges us to set out into the deep...”Duc Altum” as St. John Paul II would exclaim.Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Without Jesus though, nothing is possible! Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” I will trust you Lord. When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. Following Jesus’ words, they brought so many back to Him.So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They asked others to help and evangelize and care for these new and renewed souls. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. There are many out there who want to know who Jesus is or never heard of Jesus or don’t care to learn about Him. As a community, a Church, we must be there for them, to meet them where they are.But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” Yes, we are all sinners “and fall short of the glory of God!” But we are here to make a difference! For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; When the Spirit of the Lord is working in the world, there is nothing that can stop it.10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” Find your mission and bring people back to Jesus, to work toward His Heavenly Kingdom.11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. As disciples of the Lord Jesus, we must re-prioritize our lives in His Spirit, to follow Him and ultimately join Him in eternity.
